Bethel duo combines for 41 in win over Ada

Bethel got off to a sizzling start and Ada couldn’t ever climb out of an early hole in a 53-37 loss to the Lady Wildcats Thursday night in the semifinals of the 45th Annual Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic.

Ada, ranked No. 19 in Class 4A, dropped to 5-4 on the year and played Class 4A No. 3 Tuttle in Friday night’s third-place contest. Meanwhile Bethel — ranked No. 3 in Class 3A — improved to 8-1 and met Class A No. 2 Caddo for all the Mid-America marbles Friday night.

“I felt like my girls did a really good job of sticking to our game plan and following the scouting report for most of the night,” Bethel head coach Tara Satterfield told The Ada News. “Ada is a well-coached team and they have an outstanding point guard that’s hard to defend. I’m proud of the way our kids battled for four quarters and gave us the opportunity to play in the finals.”

Bethel’s one-two punch featuring standout senior Parker Stevenson and sophomore Josie Megehee helped Bethel build a big 21-7 first-quarter lead. Stevenson hit 5-of-7 shots in the opening frame, including 3-for-4 3-pointers, and scored 13 points. Megehee scored the other eight points on 3-of-5 shooting and a 2-of-3 effort from beyond the arc.

Ada sophomore Sanai Richardson scored all seven Ada points in the opening frame.

The Lady Cougars shot 2-of-9 (22.2%) from the field in the first period and Bethel finished 8-of-14 (57.1%).

“Parker got us going in the first quarter and our defense played really well,” Satterfield said.

Ada post player Tyley Dotson scored the first two buckets of the second quarter to trim the Bethel lead to 21-11. The Lady Cougars had several chances to get closer during a Bethel cool streak but couldn’t take advantage.

The Lady Wildcats went nearly five minutes without scoring until Megehee converted a three-point play to push the BHS lead to 27-11 at the 3:13 mark of the second quarter.

Ada got a 3-point basket by Richardson and a putback by Dotson to end the period and cut the Bethel lead to 27-18 by halftime.

The Lady Cougars clawed their way to within eight points on three separate occasions in the third quarter but couldn’t get any closer.

The Lady Wildcats led 42-29 heading into the fourth quarter and boosted their lead to as many as 18 points in the final frame.

“We had a few breakdowns on the offensive glass and gave up some put backs, but I’m proud of the way we bounced back and blocked out in the second half,” Satterfield said.

Stevenson finished with a game-high 21 points for Bethel and Megehee followed with 20. Alexis Tucker hit a pair of 3-pointers off the bench and scored eight points for the Lady Wildcats. She finished with four points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Hanna Davidson did a little bit of everything for Bethel. She finished with

Richardson ended up with 19 points for Ada. She sank a pair of 3-pointers and finished 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. She also had four rebounds and two steals.

Dotson recorded a double-double for the Lady Cougars with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jakobi Williams followed with six points to round out the Ada scoring. She also had six boards.

The Lady Wildcats scored 20 points off 12 Ada turnovers while the Lady Cougars had just five points off eight BHS miscues.

Caddo edges Class 4A Tuttle with late Robinson basket

Caddo the giant killers did it again.

Emily Robinson drove down the lane and put a shot up over Tuttle’s 6-3 standout Landry Allen with 11 seconds left in the game to give the Lady Bruins a dramatic 56-54 win over Class 4A powerhouse and defending champion Tuttle Thursday night in the semifinals of the 2022 Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic.

Caddo, ranked No. 2 in Class A, improved to 10-0 on the year, while the Lady Tigers — No. 3 in 4A, dropped to 7-2. The Lady Bruins defeated Class 5A No. 2 Carl Albert 57-46 in a first-round matchup on Wednesday.

Caddo played Bethel in the championship game Friday night while Tuttle met Ada in the third-place contest.

With the game knotted at 54-all, Robinson drove down the left side of the paint and muscled up a shot over Allen that put Caddo ahead by two.

Tuttle’s Allie Rehl put up a shot on the baseline as time was running out that fell off the rim and Jaycie Nichols secured the rebound for Caddo as the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Tigers led by as many as nine in the second quarter before settling for a 27-24 halftime lead.

Tuttle extended its lead to 34-27 after Rehl hit a pair of free shots at the 6:03 mark of the third period. However, the Lady Tigers never could pull away in the quarter thanks to a trio of 3-point baskets by Caddo’s Harlee Mullens.

Still, the Lady Tigers led 43-38 heading into the fourth frame.

Robinson scored two quick baskets to start the fourth quarter for Caddo — the last on a steal and layup — to cut the CHS deficit to 43-42.

Tuttle still led 52-49 after a fast-break bucket by Rehl with just under three minutes to play.

Robison scored on a putback on Caddo’s next trip down the floor. Her rebound was the third of the possession for the Lady Bruins.

Paityn Lowry hit a huge 3-pointer for Caddo with 1:10 showing that put the CHS team ahead 54-52.

A Rehl jumper tied the score and set up the end-of-the-game heroics by Robinson. The Caddo senior ended up with a game-high 24 points to go with nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Robinson finished 9-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Mullens scored all 12 of her points on 4-of-7 shooting from long range. Kadey McKay also reached double figures for the Lady Bruins with 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Rehl paced the Tuttle offense with 20 points. Allen was next for the Lady Tigers with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Tuttle’s Ava Battle made a pair of 3-pointers for six points.

Caddo made 9-of-20 3-point field goals compared to a 3-of-11 showing by Tuttle.

Ada girls scurry past Lady Mustangs in first round

The Ada High School girls basketball team used a momentum-stealing third-quarter flurry to take control of the game and cruise past Frontier 61-38 Thursday night in the first round of the 45th Annual Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Tournament.

The Lady Cougars, ranked No. 19 in Class 4A, improved to 5-3 on the year while the Lady Mustangs — No. 5 in Class A — lost for the first time this season, falling to 11-1.

Ada met Class 3A No. 3 Bethel Friday night in a semifinal contest inside East Central University’s Kerr Activities Center.

The annual holiday tournament wraps up today with games at 3 p.m. (seventh place), 4:30 p.m. (fifth place), 6:30 p.m. (third place) and 8 p.m. (championship).

The Lady Cougars led just 28-22 at halftime but used a relentless defensive effort to start the third quarter that turned Frontier turnovers into points.

Frontier got a floater in the lane by Bonnie Childs to open the third quarter that got the Lady Mustangs within 28-24, before Ada reeled off 14 unanswered points. Abbey Strong sank a pair of 3-pointers during the decisive AHS run that was capped by a nice drive to the basket by Sania Richardson that put Ada ahead 42-24.

“It was good to get a win. I felt like our defense kind of turned it on there in the third quarter and that helped give us a cushion,” said Ada head coach Christie Jennings. “We jumped out and started really getting after them with some full-court pressure.”

Strong buried two more 3-point shots to end the third quarter and that pushed the Ada advantage to 49-26. The locals outscored Frontier 21-4 in the third fame.

Frontier managed to stay within striking distance throughout the first half by hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter and three more in the second frame. The Lady Mustangs were 6-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half but cooled down considerably, making just 3-of-15 triples over the final two frames.

Sania Richardson paced the Ada offense with a game-best 19 points. She sank a pair of 3-pointers, handed out five assists and had three steals and four rebounds in a solid, all-around effort.

Strong scored 12 points on the strength of her four trifectas. The 5-2 junior also hustled for a game-high nine rebounds for the Lady Cougars. Jakobi Williams was next with nine points and six boards.

“I still don’t think we played really well offensively. We’ll have to be better against a good Bethel club,” Jennings said.

Ada ended the game with a huge 39-19 rebounding edge.

Jennings said being the local, host team adds extra pressure to her ballclub.

“For everyone else that comes here, it’s a really cool tournament. I think our kids kind of got caught up in the complexity of the moment (in the first half),” she explained. “These kids have grown up their entire life coming to this so it’s a lot more pressure on them. That’s why sometimes it’s hard for me to say yes to this tournament. It’s not just us playing, it’s the pressure of everybody they know from every other school in Pontotoc County being here.”

Bonnie Childs sank a trio of 3-pointers and led Frontier with 13 points. Jamie Molina also hit double digits for the Lady Mustangs with 11.

Mak is back

Ada junior Makaviya Nelson made a surprising return to the Ada starting lineup against Frontier. Nelson suffered a torn ACL on Dec. 9 versus Riverside at the first-ever Sequoyah Invitational Tournament. Nelson sank her first shot attempt of the game (and only attempted two), a 3-pointer at the 5:24 mark of the first quarter. She also went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line and scored four points and had three rebounds in limited action.

Robinson paves way for Caddo’s win over Carl Albert

In a mild 2022 Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America surprise, the Caddo Lady Bruins used a big game from senior Emily Robinson to knock off Carl Albert 57-46 in a first-round contest Wednesday inside East Central University’s Kerr Activities Center.

Caddo, ranked No. 2 in Class A, stayed unbeaten at 9-0 on the year, while Class 5A No. 2 Carl Albert fell to 8-1.

Robinson exploded for a Mid-America Day 1 high of 26 points and also had 12 rebounds and eight assists, just missing a triple-double. She finished 10-of-17 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Caddo led just 36-32 after Carl Albert post player Audrey Plunkett scored a basket late in the third quarter. The Lady Bruins then scored 11 straight points — including seven by Robinson — to push their lead to 47-32 at the 5:30 mark of the fourth period.

The Lady Titans never got within single digits the rest of the way.

Caddo hit 7-of-10 field goals in the first quarter and led 18-9 after a 3-pointer by Harlee Mullens at the 1:16 mark.

Kennedy Coder hit two free throws and Ausha Moore followed with a fast-break bucket to end the second period and get the Lady Titans within 26-22 by halftime.

The biggest difference in the contest came from beyond the 3-point arc. Caddo hit 5-of-13 3-point shots and Carl Albert — usually a good 3-point shooting team — didn’t make a single triple in 15 tries.

Jaycie Nichols scored 16 points for Caddo. She finished 7-of-9 from the field, hit a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds. Mullens was next for the Lady Bruins with eight points.

Carl Albert got 12 points from both Ariana Diaz and Ausha Moore. Diaz finished 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and had four rebounds. Moore also had four rebounds for CA.

Caddo was able to overcome 17 turnovers.

The Lady Titans finished 14-of-16 from the free-throw line compared to an 8-of-14 effort by the Lady Bruins.

Richard R. Barron | The Ada News — Caddo senior Emily Robinson (10) scoots past Carl Albert defender Kennedy Coder (22) during their matchup Wednesday in the first round of the Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic, sponsored by Vision Bank. Robinson scored 26 points in her team’s 57-46 victory.

Big fourth quarter propels Bethel past Georgetown

Bethel got a strong start against Georgetown, Texas during their first-round contest Wednesday night at the 2022 Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic.

The Lady Wildcats finished the game even stronger and rallied past their Texas counterparts for a 53-41 victory inside East Central University’s Kerr Activities Center.

Bethel, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, improved to 7-1 on the year, while Georgetown fell to 11-8. The Lady Eagles were playing in their first contest since Dec. 16 and had only one practice during that span — a Monday workout at Byng High School.

The Lady Wildcats trailed 37-34 heading into the final period but scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter to speed past Georgetown.

“It was a good win. It was good to get one under our belt the first time being here for these kids and me as a head coach,” Bethel head coach Tara Satterfield told The Ada News. “We had some nerves but I felt like we worked them out.”

Bethel standout Parker Stevenson hit a 3-pointer to open start the late run and Brooklyn Duff and Josie Megehee converted back-to-back, old-fashioned three-point plays to get the Lady Wildcats rolling.

“That was huge and gave us some momentum and we were able to seal it with our defense and rebounding,” said Satterfield.

Bethel raced out to a 15-6 lead to start the game before the Lady Eagles scored 20 points in the second period to get within 29-26 by halftime. Georgetown then limited the explosive Bethel offense to just five points in the third period to grab its three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Josie Megehee, a sophomore, led the BHS attack, finishing with 23 points and eight rebounds. Stevenson added a “quiet” 12 points, while Hanna Davidson just missed double figures with eight.

Duff scored six points but drew an incredible five offensive fouls on defense for the Lady Wildcats.

“That kid takes so much pride on that end of the floor and takes so much pride taking charges,” Satterfield said. “Her goal is to lead the state in taking charges. That’s what she wants to do. She’s tough. I told her it’s like a slam dunk in boys basketball. It gets your teammates excited. It gets the crowd excited. The bench over here gets fired up. she’s a competitor that will do whatever it takes to win for her team.”

Georgetown got 10 points from Ainsley Pelczar and eight from Taylor Meynes. Bella Dabbs hit a pair of 3-pointers for her six points and Katie Peiffer also had six for the Lady Eagles.

Richard R. Barron | The Ada News — Bethel sophomore Josie Megehee (21) puts up a shot in the lane while being surrounded by three Georgetown defenders during a first-round game at the 2022 Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic, sponsored by Vision Bank. Tuttle surges past Class B Pittsburg

Defending champion Tuttle flexed its muscles during the first round of the 45th Annual Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic.

The Lady Tigers overwhelmed Pittsburg 57-13 Wednesday afternoon inside East Central University’s Kerr Activities Center. Tuttle, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, improved to 7-1 on the year and advanced to tonight’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal contest. The Lady Panthers, No. 2 in Class B, fell to 8-3 and will play today in a 3 p.m. consolation contest.

It didn’t take long for Tuttle to take control. The Lady Tigers started the game on a 12-3 run and quickly extended it to 23-5 on a steal and basket by Marissa Sandlin at the 6:29 mark of the second quarter.

Tuttle carried a 30-11 lead into halftime. The Lady Tigers sank 12-24 field goals during the first two quarters while Pittsburg was limited to 3-of-15 (20%) shooting.

Unfortunately for the Lady Panthers, it got worse. Pittsburg scored just two total points in the entire second half via a nice spin move in the lane by Camryn Graham at the 3:05 mark of the second period. Tuttle then ended the game on a huge 20-0 run.

Landry Allen paced a balanced THS scoring effort with 11 points to go with eight rebounds and a pair of steals. She hit 5-of-6 field goals including one 3-pointer Allie Rehl was next for Tuttle with nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Marissa Sandlin followed with seven points and five rebounds off the bench.

Mikole Skagg, Samantha Teagur and Layla Kerr ended up with six points each for the winners.

Pittsburg got six points and eight rebounds from Akiera Hawk. Catyn Graham followed with five points. The Lady Panthers were hampered by 18 turnovers.
